Turn a Regular Headshot Into a Cold Winter Portrait

Step 1

Open a new file, in this case I used 940x 1200 pixels, since the image is just a portrait, that resolution is great.

Let’s select the models skin with the lasso tool. Don’t worry about been perfect cause then you can use the eraser in the edges of the image.

After the selection is made you have to press CTRL + J to duplicate the skin. So then you are gonna have a new layer like this:

Then you have to apply a surface blur filter, to make the skin softer. For this you have to go to Filter -> Blur -> surface blur-> and then add 8 for radius and for threshold.

Then desatured the skin’s layer a little bit like -30%. Press CTRL + U to see the menu.

Use the patch tool to erase the hair that is on the model’s lips.

After removing all those imperfections, use the lasso tool to select the model’s lips, and duplicate the layer pressing CTRL + J. Remember that doesn’t matter if it not perfect you can always used the eraser close to the edges.

In the layer you duplicate apply multiply with 50% of opacity and 80% of fill, to make the lips darker.

Press Ctrl + j to duplicate the lip’s layer once again. In this case use the layer mode in soft light at 60% of opacity. that will make the lips look shining.

Now we are going to work in the eyes. Go to the layer of the model’s skin and select the eyes with lasso tool then duplicate the layer CTRL + J.

Press ctrl + u to change the color of the eyes. I used hue at 200 to make the eyes blue.

Duplicate the eye’s layer and use the layer in color dodge option at 70% of opacity to achieve this look.

To do the blush I created a new layer and paint the model’s cheeks with a soft brush, using a pink tone.

Apply Gaussian blur filter at 60% to make the blush look more natural.

Put the layer in multiply with 50% of opacity and 80% of fill.

To make the model’s makeup I apply blue eye shadows. So to make this create a new layer, press shift+crtl+N. then choose a dark blue violet in the palette, and paint the models eye with a soft brush.

Apply Gaussian blur filter with a 8.0 radius. and then put the layer in multiply. you can choose to make the eyeshadow look darker or softer changing the opacity of the layer as you prefer.

Repeat the process with different tones and colors. Like this:
This first image shows the eyeshadows with the Gaussian blur.

Then in this image you can see that the layer is in soft light mode.

To make the eyeliner you can use pen tool. Make the trace in the models eye like this:

Then select the option stroke path.

Then select brush pressure.

Make the eyeliner softer with the smudge tool. Also you can reduce the opacity to blend it even more.

To create the glitter we are going to used another image. I cut a part of the image with the lasso tool and then put that selection over the model.

Erase the parts you don’t need from the selection, putting the layer in soft light. Then put the layer at 70% of opacity. Repeat this with the other eye. Also you can change the color of the glitter. I desatured this one a little bit.

Remember to put some eyeshadow in the lower part of the eye. I used a intense dark blue and add some Gaussian blur. Also the layer is in normal mode.

Also to make the eye stand out even more you can add a white line under the eyebrow with the pen tool.

Used smudge tool to make the white line softer and then reduce the opacity of the layer to 50%.

Paint over the eyebrows of the model with a soft brush and reduce the layer opacity to 70% to make the eyebrows darker.

To end with the eyeshadows paint with a soft brush using pastel cyan and white

Add some Gaussian blur and put the layer in overlay at 70% to get this result.

Create a new layer to make some reflections in the lips and skin with pen tool and soft brushes.

Use smudge tool to make the reflections softer and reduce opacity and fill to 70%.

To make the model’s hair I used some brushes.

Also I used the pen tool to create more hair.

Now we are going to start with the lighting and coloring. Add a new layer and paint it blue, also a little bit of white in the center and black in the edges.

Then apply Gaussian blur with 100% radius

And used the layer in soft light.

Add a new layer and use gradient tool. I used in this layer pink and blue. Also apply Gaussian blur to make it softer.

Add a new gradient with dark blue and use once again the layer in soft light with 70% of opacity.

Paint the model’s skin with a blue tone using a soft brush.

Duplicate the model’s original layer CTRL + J and change the color pressing CTRL + U

Paint light with a soft brush with 70% of opacity using white color, then put the layer in soft light.

Add a new layer and use paint bucket with the color 60% gray. Put the layer in overlay and paint over that layer with dodge and burn tool to create shadows and lights.

Add some snow, I used brushes for this.

To end with this manipulation I reduce the saturation a -20. And that’s it!!!
