Hi guys, today I’ll show you how to create cool red curtains in
Photoshop from scratch. Along the way, you learn to make a nice fabric
texture, tassel and shadows for the curtains. We’ll use pen tool,
different filters, warp tool and various blending options to achieve the
final outcome. So, let’s get started!
Details
Program: Photoshop CS 6 or other versionsApproximate time: 30-40 Minutes
Fina Result:
Step 1
Create a new document in Photoshop with 1000px width and 1000px height.
Step 2
Set default colors, pure white as your foreground color and pure black as background. Now go to Filter> Render> Fibers. Use the given values here.
Step 3
Next go to Filter> Filter Gallery> Artistic> Cutout and use the given values here.
Step 4
Now go to Filter> Blur> Motion blur and apply the given settings for motion blur.
Step 5
So far, we have made the texture we want for the curtains, now I’ll give it some color. Double-click on the texture layer to open the Layer style window and apply the following settings for Color overlay.
Step 6
Now duplicate the texture and hide the original texture layer by clicking the eye in front of that layer. Next, select half of the texture on the duplicated layer using rectangular marquee tool, press Ctrl+ X to cut the selection and then press Ctrl+ V to paste the selection on a new layer. You will notice that red color would disappear the moment you paste the selection. To recolor that half, right click on the colored texture layer and select the option of ‘Copy layer style’. Now right click on this gray tone half texture layer and select ‘paste layer style’.
Now click on one of the half texture layers and go to Edit> Transform> Warp. Use it to give texture shape like a curtain.
Once you are satisfied with the shape, drag this layer more towards the left side of the canvas. Now make the other curtain in the same way.
Step 7
Select the pen tool (Tool mode: Shape) and draw the shape as below on a new layer. Reduce the opacity of this layer, so you can adjust the curves for the curtain accordingly. You can use any color to draw this shape, it doesn’t matter.
Now press Ctrl+ click on this new shape layer to make selection around it. Now click on the left curtain layer and go to Edit> Clear.
Adjust the bottom of the right sided curtain in the same way.
Step 8
Next, select a small rectangular portion from the original texture layer, copy and paste it on a new layer. Flip it 90⁰ by going to Edit> Transform> Rotate 90⁰. After that, apply the following settings for warp in the properties bar to make an arc.
Now resize and position it at the top center of the canvas using free transform tool. Duplicate it twice and arrange these copies on both sides of it as below.
Step 9
Next, we’ll create tassel to hold back the curtains. Set #ecc242as your foreground color and make a custom rope brush which I have explained in my previous tutorial in step 11. Now select the pen tool (Tool mode: Path) and draw a curved path as below. Once you are done, right click and choose the option of Stroke path and then choose brush.
Make such strokes around both curtains using the same technique.
Step 10
Select all the rope layers, then right click on the selected layer and choose the option of merge layers. Label it as ropes. After that, double-click on this layer and apply the following layer style settings on it.
Step 11
Draw the following 2 shapes using pen tool (Tool mode: Shape).
Apply the following layer style settings on the lower shape layer.
Apply the same layer style settings for the upper shape except for the satin to get the effect as below. After that, duplicate both shapes and flip them horizontally for the right sided curtain. To do so, go to Edit> Transform> Flip Horizontal.
Step 12
Now to form shadows of the top curtains, select soft round brush tool with 20% opacity and apply it on new layers to form shadows as shown below.
Step 13
Next, we’ll make shadow of the main curtains on the wall. Duplicate the left sided curtain layer, place this layer below the original layer, turn it black using color overlay. Use warp tool to give it following shape.
Reduce the opacity of this layer to 30%. Now form shadow for the right sided curtain in the same way.
Step 14
Make shadow for the tassel in the same way. To create shadow on the floor, make irregular shape using pen tool and reduce its opacity to 30%.
Step 15
Collect all the shadow layers in a group, merge this group and go to Filter> Blur> Gaussian blur. Use the value of 5px here.
