Step 1: Create a Photoshop Image File
Now, let’s start by creating a new image file, go to the Menu bar and click File > New, and then input the following values on their respective fields:
- Preset: Custom
- Width: 2480 pixels
- Height: 3508 pixels
- Resolution: 300pixels/inch
- Color Mode: RGB Color
- Background Contents: Transparent
Step 2: Create the Sky
In this step, we will be creating the sky of our image. To start, open “big blue sky stock” by fahrmboy stock. Next activate the Rectangular Marquee Tool by pressing M on your keyboard.
Once activated, create a selection area around the sky as shown below:
Step 3
Now that you have the sky selected, left-click on it and drag that sky to our canvas using the Move tool (V). Position it as shown below:
Now, because of its size, we definitely need to reduce it to give the background a sense of depth and in order for us to resize the “sky”, we would need the Transform tool. Activate the Transform tool (Ctrl/Cmd + T) and resize the image as shown below:
The result:
Step 4
Now, let’s darken the sky to make it look more dramatic. Start by left-clicking on the “sky” layer and then press Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + N on your keyboard to create a new layer directly above the selected layer; once the box opens, input “darken sky”.
Step 5
Once you’re done with that, let’s now activate the Brush tool (B) but before we start, make sure that the active Brushes are the default brushes. The default Photoshop brushes are shown on the image below, if that’s not what you see, then follow the instructions below:
Right click the canvas while a layer is selected and while the Brush tool (B) is activated and then click on the button highlighted below:
Then click on “Reset Brushes” from the contextual menu.
Now, that that is done input the following settings for our Brush tool (B):
- Brush size: 2500px
- Hardness: 0%
- Opacity: 15%
- Flow: 100%
- #: 000000
Note: The #: 000000 is the color of the brush. To change it to that, simply do the following:
Once the Color Picker box opens, input the following on the # box:
Now, we’re all set to paint, use the Brush tool on the following region on the darken sky layer:
The result of that should be similar to this:
Step 6: Create the Floor
Now, we will proceed to making the wooden floor to where the woman’s head is floating on. To start, open the stock image: “Old wood texture” by kovik. Once open, activate the Move tool (V) and drag it to our canvas. Put this layer above the “sky” layer and rename it to “floor”.
To rename a layer, simply double-click on the words: “layer 1” (you can find that on the layer window) to prompt a text box to appear.
It should appear on the image like this:
Step 7
Now, we would want this floor to appear flat and not like a wall, to do that, we would need the help of the Transform tool. Activate the Transform tool (Ctrl/Cmd + T) and right click on the canvas to bring out the contextual menu. Once it is up, click on Perspective.
Let’s transform it to a floor now, see image below:
The result:
Step 8
Next, we will darken the floor to make the light more realistic. First, let’s create a new layer (Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + N) above the floor, name it “darken floor” and then activate the Brush tool (B), once open, input the following:
- Brush size: 1500px
- Hardness: 0%
- Opacity: 15%
- Flow: 100%
- #: 000000
- Now, let’s paint:
The result:
Step 9
Next, let’s enhance the light on the horizon. Create a new layer above the darken floor layer (Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + N) and then name this new layer as “horizon”.
Activate the Brush tool (B) and input the following:
- Brush size: 1300px
- Hardness: 0%
- Opacity: 25%
- Flow: 100%
- #: ffffff
Now, let’s paint:
The result:
Step 10
When you’re done, select all the layers that we’ve created and press Ctrl/Cmd + G to group them. Once grouped, rename it to “Background”.
Step 11: Create the Lady’s head
In this step, we will be creating the woman’s head. To start, let’s open “Bite Me5” by faestock.
Once open, activate the Polygonal Lasso Tool (L)
Now, let’s create a selection area around the head of this woman.
Note: The Polygonal Lasso tool (L) is great in creating straight lines to form polygonal shapes, hence its name; create a selection area around the woman’s head as shown below:
Step 12
Once you’ve done that, activate the Move tool (V) and drag her head to our canvas. Put this layer above the “Background” group. Rename this layer to “head”.
Step 13
Now, activate the Transform tool (Ctrl/Cmd + T), resize the head and reposition it as shown below:
Step 14
Next, we will “open up” the woman’s head to see what’s inside her mind. Let’s start by “cutting it” – activate the Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) and create a selection area as shown below:
Step 15
Once that area has been deleted, it should look like this:
Step 16
Next, we will create the “insides” of her head. To start, create a new layer (Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + N) and input “Clone Stamped area”. Put this layer below the “head” layer so that the result would come up at the back of the “head” layer. Now, once it has been created, activate the Clone Stamp tool by pressing S on your keyboard.
Then input the following for the Clone Stamp tool:
- Brush size: 90px
- Hardness: 0%
- Opacity: 100%
- Flow: 100%
- Let’s now start cloning:
To start, first make sure that you Alt + Left click on the “head” layer (alt + Left click on her forehead as shown below):
Next, left-click on the “Clone Stamped area” layer and then brush-in the area using the left mouse button shown below:
The result of that should be similar to this:
Now, if you’d notice the area created by the Clone Stamp tool is blurred on the edges so we’d need to make it look more realistic. For that to happen, activate the Polygonal Lasso tool (L) and create a selection area as shown below and then Delete the excess blurred area.
The result of that should be similar to this:
Step 17
Next, to make the “insides” look even more realistic, we would need to fix the lighting on it. Create a new layer (Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + N) and then name it “darken Clone Stamped Area”, once done, right click on this newly created layer and choose “Create Clipping Mask” from the contextual menu. Make sure to put this layer above the “Clone Stamped Area” layer.
The Clipping Mask allows the user to paint only on the clipped layer.
Now, activate the Brush tool (B) and input the following:
- Brush size: 200px
- Hardness: 0%
- Opacity: 25%
- Flow: 100%
- #: 000000
Let’s paint!
The result of that should be similar to this:
Step 18
Next, let’s adjust the lighting on the “head” layer. Click on the “head” layer and then activate the Burn tool (O).
Once the Burn tool has been activated input the following values for it:
- Brush size: 1000px
- Hardness: 0%
- Range: Midtones
- Exposure: 8%
Now, let’s darken the areas shown below:
The result of that should be similar to this:
Step 19
Now, let’s create the “head” layer’s shadow. To start, create a new layer (Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + N) and name it “head shadow”. Put this layer below all the other layers that we’ve created for this step.
Activate the Brush tool (B) and input the following:
-
Brush size: 300px
-
Hardness: 0%
-
Opacity: 15%
-
Flow: 100%
-
#: 000000
Now, let’s paint:
The result of that should be similar to this:
Step 20
Finally, let’s further adjust the brightness of her face to match with the shadow. To start, create a new layer (Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + N) above all the layers that we’ve created on this step; name it “darken head”. Once done, right click on this layer and choose “Create Clipping Mask”.
Activate the Brush tool (B) and input the following:
- Brush size: 800px
- Hardness: 0%
- Opacity: 8%
