 Learn how to create this fantasy photo manipulation of Red Riding Hood. This tutorial will show you how to work with the Pen tool, create an illusion of depth, lighting, and more!

Step 1

Extract the model from the original image; I used the Quick selection tool to make this, because there’s a lot of contrast between the model and the background. So this will make it easier.

After your selection is done. Press CTRL + J to duplicate the selection, and you will have something like this:

Then you can fix little details from the basket with the polygonal lasso tool.

Press delete to erase the selection.

Press CTRL + N to open a new file with 1500 x 1500 pixels.

Open the forest stock and with the move tool put it in the new file you opened before.

Change the size of the forest pressing CTRL + T then in the options you find in the upper side of the image put W: -70 and H: 70. That will reduce the image to a 70% of the original side. Press Enter to apply the changes.

To make the field, I used this image.

Erase a part of the field with the eraser tool.

You’ll get something like this:

Then you have to change this layer color. To do it press CTRL + U, and click the option colorize.

Now we are going to put the option Hue at 13, the option saturation at 28 and the lightness in -15.

Now we are going to add the flowers layer.

After adding the new layer, you have to change the size once again pressing CTRL + T. Until you get the desired result. In this case I reduce the size to a 60%.

Let’s change the color again to get that brownish tones. Press CTRL+ U and click in colorize. I used Hue: 16 Saturation: 25 and Lightness: -5.

Put the layer in soft light mode light this:

Press CTRL + T to rotate a little bit the layer.

Pass the eraser in the areas you don’t want this layer to be visible. I used a soft brush to achieve this result.

Now create a new group. Press the folder that is in lower part of the screen.

Put the background layers in this new group. Just grab the layers and put then over the folder.

When you have all the layers in the folder, you can convert it into a smart objet. To do that: give a right click in the folder and press the option smart object.

After you apply the smart object the layer have to look like this. This may help if you want to change any of the layers later.

Duplicate the layer pressing CTRL + J and rasterize giving right click in the image and click the option “rasterize layer.”

Change background colors. Press CTRL+U and in the option saturation put -30.

Duplicate the layer pressing CTRL + J and then change the layer to soft light at 70% of opacity.

Modify color pressing CTRL+U in colorize mode. Adjust hue at 207 and press ok.

Duplicate that layer once again. Change color CTRL+U. just add more saturation 30%. Also reduce the fill of the layer at 70%.

Transfer the model to the background and fix the size pressing CTRL+J.

Open a stock picture from a rock and cut the rock out with quick selection tool.

Put the stone layer before the model’s layer and reduce the size with CTRL+T.

Select mode’s hood with the polygonal lasso tool and duplicate the layer CTRL+J.

Change the color of the hood pressing CTRL+U in saturation put -40.

: Duplicate the hood layer again. Change it to multiply mode and reduce opacity to 50% and Fill to 70%.

Return to the model’s layer, and select her dress with lasso tool and then duplicate the layer with CTRL+J.

Reduce the saturation. Press CTRL + U. and in the option saturation put -100. In that way the dress will be black.

Now select the model skin, and press CTRL+J to duplicate the layer.

Go to filter-> Blur-> Surface Blur, and add 7 pixels for radius and for threshold to make the skin softer.

Change the color of the skin, pressing CTRL+U. Saturation -60.

To make the eyes brighter, select the eyes with the lasso tool, duplicate the layer CTRL+J. and change the layer mode to color dodge.

Also if you want to make her eyes another color, just have to make some adjustments pressing CTRL+U. Using the layer in color mode.

Create a new layer pressing SHIFT+CTRL+N, and paint with a soft brush over the model’s cheeks to make the blush, with a pink tone.

Put the layer in multiply, and add some Gaussian blur. Go to filter -> blur -> Gaussian Blur. Add 10 of radius. You can change the opacity of the layer as much as you like.

The eyeshadows, this step is very easy cause you can play with colors. Create a new layer Shift+Ctrl+N. used a soft round brush in the model’s eye.

Then change the layer to multiply, and used smudge tool to make it softer. Repeat this process with another color to get a better effect.

To paint the hair I used the pen tool. Create a new layer, then select the freeform pen tool and star drawing the hair with the mouse.

Give a right click in the image and you are going to have a menu, choose the Stroke Path option.

Then select Brush Pressure.

And the Result is this one. Also you can use Blur tool to make the strokes softer.

To make more hair you can duplicate the layer you just made and just change color or shape using free transform. CTRL+T. option Warp.

In the first Image you see the warp option, then I change the color so you can see where are the hairs from that layer.

We are going to add some shadow under the basket. Create a new layer, the paint with a soft brush under the basket.

Then add some Blur. Filter-> Blur -> Gaussian blur.

You will get this result

Now we need to fix the model’s dress, in the bottom, to do this I used the eraser. Until you get something like this:

Now you need to add the wolf to the image. Cut the wolf with the quick selection tool.

Put the wolf in the art. And add some Gaussian blur Filter-> Blur – Gaussian blur.

To complete that distant effect we have to add also blur to the trees. go to the background layer and select only the trees with lasso tool.

Duplicate the layer CTRL+J. Then press Ctrl+F. this will Apply the last filter you used. In this case the Gaussian Blur. and the result has to be this:

Add some bird and branches brushes. New Layer shift+crtrl+n. pick some bird and branches brushes and used the layer with 80% of opacity.

Now lighting, this part is the most important cause is going to bring the art more realistic. Start creating a new layer, the paint with a soft White brush around the model.

Use the layer in soft light.

Create a new layer and used Gradient tool like this:

Repeat the process with a blue tone.

Go to the option “create a new fill or adjustment layer”. Press the option selective color.

Go to the option neutral and change the numbers like this:

I create another gradient with some colors to create a nice light effect.

In a new layer used a black soft brush and in another layer a white brush to create shadows and lights.

Paint with blue and yellow over the model.

Change the layer to overlay with 70% of opacity.

In a new layer use the elliptical tool to make a circle.

Press right click and the click in the option “select inverse”.

Use the paint bucket like this:

Then go to Filter – blur – Gaussian blur. Add 150 to radius.

The Final touch is change the side of the circle, so the image can be clearly. Press CTRL+T. and made the layer bigger I used 125% bigger.
